Is Time Travel Possible? The answer might surprise you. Did you know that forward time travel is already a proven reality? Thanks to Albert Einstein’s theories of relativity, we know that time is a dynamic and malleable dimension. By exploiting time dilation, a traveler moving at near-light speeds or hovering near the intense gravity of a supermassive black hole experiences time much more slowly than people back on Earth. We even see these time-stretching effects, which are calculated by the Lorentz factor, in our daily lives with GPS satellites and in particle accelerators at CERN. But what about traveling to the past? We explore the seemingly impenetrable barriers preventing backward time travel. From universe-breaking logic puzzles like the Grandfather Paradox and Bootstrap Paradox, to Stephen Hawking’s “chronology protection conjecture\“, nature appears strictly built to protect the sequence of cause and effect. Even theoretical shortcuts like wormholes are likely blocked by quantum collapse and the need for impossible “exotic matter”.
